Janine S. Hiller, professor of business law in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emerita title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are especially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1981, Hiller made significant contributions to legal studies and ethics through her work at the intersection of technology and law, focusing on cyber law, cybersecurity, privacy, and data law and ethics.

She held leadership positions in professional organizations, including the office of president in the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and service on its executive committee.

In 2013, Hiller was named the Richard E. Sorensen Professor of Finance in recognition of her teaching and research excellence.

In the classroom, she designed and taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses across the business law, ethics, and information technology curriculum, In addition, she served the Pamplin community as its director of integrated security and as associate dean of graduate and international affairs. She also was a faculty advisor and faculty chair of the University Honor System.

Her research has appeared in the American Business Law Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Decision Support Systems, and the Computer Law and Security Review. 

Hiller received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Richmond.
